A special court on Friday permitted Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, to attend his brother-in-law Nihal Khan’s funeral either physically or through video-conference. Khan was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

Kaskar and his son Mohammed Rizwan had sought permission to attend the funeral which was to take place on Friday in Mumbai. The two had submitted Nihal Khan’s death certificate of and sought permission to attend the last rites to pay respects to him.

The court directed the superintendent of Thane Central Jail and Arthur Road jail — where Kaskar and Rizwan are lodged respectively in connection with offences of alleged extortion — to take them to the graveyard to attend the final rites. After jail authorities submitted that it may not be possible to take them to the graveyard, the court said that they should then be allowed to attend the rites through video-conference.

The court further directed the jail authorities to ensure that they are taken for the rites with sufficient police security and readmitted to the jails after the rites are done.
