Counsellors flooded with calls on admission process

Appointed by the Education Board to help SSC students and their parents cope with anxiety and post-result stress,the counsellors say they are bombarded with queries related to the admission process instead. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) had also set up a separate helpline to help students with admission-related queries.

The board had appointed eight counsellors to provide psychological help to students and parents post-result. However,these too have been forced to field technical queries pertaining to the admission procedures. Sayali Kulkarni,a board-appointed counsellor,said,Most students are unaware of the role of a counsellor. Almost 60 per cent of the calls we get are related to the admission process.

Another counsellor,Yashashri Huddar,said,It should be made clear to the students that counseling numbers are not meant for general queries.

The counsellors have been a busy lot with each one receiving 200 to 300 calls a day in the first two days of its launch. However,the calls have now come down to 50-100 a day. Most calls were to enquire about or confirm results,how to go about the online admission process,when and where the marksheets will be made available etc.

The general helpline number set up by the board has also been busy with 100-250 calls a day. Students mostly enquire about migration,verification of results,duplication of marksheets and problems in filling the online form, said Chaya Medhkar,one of the three officers manning the helpline.

The helpline is operational till June 27,the day the SSC marksheets are slated to be released.
