The Nizampura police in Bhiwandi have launched a manhunt for three unidentified men who allegedly barged inside a house in the early hours of Monday morning, overpowered a 22-year-old man and raped his 21-year-old wife.

According to police sources, the incident is alleged to have occurred between 1:00 am to 1:30 am on Monday.

“The victims have in their statement said that they stay in a room in a chawl in Nizampura, while their father-in-law stays in an adjacent room, and that the three accused forced their way into the house at around 1:00 am on Monday. The trio first robbed the couple of their jewellery after which they assaulted and subdued the husband and raped the wife,” said an officer with the Nizampura police.

The trio fled the scene after the alleged gangrape and the couple subsequently approached the Nizampura police and a case of gangrape, assault, criminal intimidation and robbery was registered under the Indian Penal Code.

The police said that the couple got married in May this year in their native place. As the girl’s father works in a powerloom in Nizampura, the couple decided to shift to Nizampura this month, and subsequently they rented two rooms in a chawl, one for themselves and one for the wife’s father.

“The couple had only shifted to Bhiwandi on August 8 and do not know many people in the locality as yet. We are trying to identify and apprehend the accused based on the descriptions provided by the victims,” the officer added.

Teams of policemen are also making inquiries in the locality to check if any of the resident heard any sounds of the struggle or saw three men entering or leaving the locality in the early hours of Monday morning when the offense is alleged to have occurred.

Investigations are also underway to check on the movements of all young men in their mid twenties between 1:00 and 1:30 am on Monday, sources said.
