Cops foil robbery bid in jewellery store at Kurla, 4 held

The police said that the gang of five had convened at a bus stop in Kurla before striking the jewellery store

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Monday arrested four out of five accused who were allegedly preparing to rob a jewellery store in Kurla. The police said that the gang of five had convened at a bus stop in Kurla before striking the jewellery store when they were intercepted, and have recovered two pistols and 18 live rounds from the accused.

According to Crime Branch officers, the arrests were the result of a tip off received by the Crime Branch Unit V, according to which, a gang of robbers would be robbing a jewellery store in Kurla on Monday. The informant further told Unit V officers that the gang would be getting together at a bus stop near the Kurla Garden on the LBS road before proceeding to commit the crime and accordingly, the police laid a trap at the spot.

“Late in the afternoon, two men reached the bus stop and spent some time talking to each other. A short while later, a Maruti Swift Desire car pulled up near the bus stop and two more men got out and joined the first two. The four men were talking among themselves when our informant signalled to us that there were the robbers. We moved in and surrounded the vehicle, and in the ensuing scuffle, the fifth member of the gang, who was inside the car, managed to jump out and flee the scene, while the four others were arrested,” said a Crime Branch officer.

The arrested accused have been identified as Nizam Khan (35), Harun Sheikh (35), Ajit More (30) and Mukhtar Pathan (40). A search of the four accused revealed two 7.65 mm bore pistols, 18 live rounds of ammunition and a dagger.
