The state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday trapped and arrested an officer with the Azad Maidan Police station for allegedly accepting a bribe from the father of an accused arrested last year.
According to ACB officials, the complainant has an imitation jewellery business and his son had been arrested by police sub-inspector Sunil Bhaat last year in a case of assault. He was subsequently released on bail, and the complainant was trying to get him a job out of Mumbai. However, he could not leave the city till the case against him was under way, and hence, the complainant approached Bhaat, requesting his assistance in speedy disposal of the case.
“Bhaat demanded Rs 5,000 from the complainant and told him there would be no progress in the case unless he paid the money. He then approached us and after verifying the complainant’s claims, we registered a case against Bhaat,” an ACB officer said.
The ACB laid a trap and as per its instructions, the complainant contacted Bhaat and expressed willingness to pay the bribe.
On Monday, the complainant went to the police station, where Bhaat was present along with a civilian identified as Atahullah Sheikh. They accepted Rs 5,000 from the complainant, after which ACB officers moved in and arrested both of them.
They were both charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further inquiries against them are under way, ACB officers said.
