A 47-year-old police constable was arrested by the Colaba police after a woman filed a case of rape against him. The woman alleged that the accused,Deepak Chavan, attached to the Local Arms Unit III (Worli),had promised to marry her after persuading her to enter into a physical relationship with him.
According to the womans complaint, she and Chavan had been into a relationship for five years. She was compelled to lodge a complaint after realising that Chavan had no intentions of marrying her.
The police arrested Chavan on Saturday night. Chavan, who is married, stays in police quarters in Colaba and his wife and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter stay in Ahmedabad. According to the complainant, who is employed as a clerk at the SNDT College, she had first met Chavan in 2003 at the MHADA office at Mantralaya.
The womans father is a retired MHADA employee and the family stays at a MHADA flat in Borivli. In 2003,she had come to the Mantralaya for some work and met Chavan, who was a telephone operator at the MHADA Department. The two became friends, said police inspector Prakash Bhoite from the Colaba police station, who is investigating the case.
