Taking up the issue of eye donations in the state, the Bombay High Court on Friday suggested that the state government could prepare a common waiting list of applicants for organ transplants at the district level.
The bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Roshan Dalvi was hearing a PIL by activist Sampat Shetty. The petitioner demands that city-based organisation Eye Bank Co-ordination and Research Centre should ensure greater transparency in its dealings. According to him,the viability of the cornea at the organisation is 20 per cent, while the same figure in other cities is above 40 per cent. The judges said,“The state government should consider preparing a common centralised list for applicants for transplantation of organs, especially cornea.” “The list can be maintained by the District Health Officer,” Chief Justice Shah suggested.
