In an effort to streamline online applications and admission to junior colleges, the deputy director of education,Mumbai office, held a meeting with students, parents, and principals on Thursday to get their suggestions and incorporate them while setting up the website for online applications.

The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL) that offers online admission to institutes like University of Pune, demonstrated its online admission portal. MKCL has over 500 centres in the area under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. To ensure that the process is not time consuming and that students don’t have to spend much on information brochures and other material, the website will contain information about brochures, rules and regulations, eligibility criteria among others of colleges in Mumbai, said VK Wankhede, deputy director of education,Mumbai.

Dr A P Wadegaonkar,General Manager- Educational e-Governance,MKCL said,“The students can take print outs of the application form, submit them to the nearest MKCL- authorised learning centre which will then go through the applications and allot colleges based on factors like merit, seats available, preference etc after the scrutinising by deputy director’s office. The deputy director’s office will provide data about intake capacity, vacant seats in colleges, among others to MKCL.” MKCL may also attach to schools for helping students fill the application forms. “On the day of class 10 results, students could fill up courses, college preference forms that will also contain information about cut off percentages last year and then submit that to MKCL,” he added. Wankhede said that there would be counseling sessions organised in schools and colleges to explain the entire process to principals and students. Students who figure in the merit lists will also get SMSes informing them of their selection and colleges will be informed of the students who have been allotted different colleges. Besides, there will also be intimation and reminders for payment of fees, filling up of admission forms etc sent to students.

MKCL is one of the organisations from whom the deputy director’s office has invited suggestions and recommendations. However,it is not confirmed if MKCL will be setting up the website.
