With Mumbais first Metro rail corridor expected to be complete by the end of this year,the citys development authority will start construction of the next line from Colaba to Seepz via Bandra in January next year.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will initially take up the construction of the Metro car depot at Aarey Colony and Cuffe Parade station at the fag-end of the corridor.
We will start construction at Goregaon and Cuffe Parade as these stretches have the least problems related to land acquisition. The right of way is clear, said Valsa Nair-Singh,who recently took over as additional metropolitan commissioner at MMRDA.
The development authority is in the process of inviting tenders to construct the Rs 24,000-crore Metro corridor in packages.
Although the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro will be nearly thrice as long as the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro,land acquisition for the former is lesser than what was needed for the first Metro line. The 34-km Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro will be fully underground as against the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro,which is a completely elevated corridor.
Other than the land required for the car depot at Aarey Colony,MMRDA needs a total of 16 hectares for the second corridor wherever station landings are to be built. MMRDA was earlier facing opposition from residents of Chimatpada near the proposed Marol Naka station. They wanted in-situ rehabilitation,while the plot is reserved as a recreation ground.
They have allowed us to conduct a social impact assessment. We are trying to work out a rehabilitation plan, said Nair-Singh.
For the car depot,MMRDA has got the state nod for about 30 acres.
