After over three years as the state’s Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan is set to make his maiden foreign trip, to Davos-Klosters in Switzerland from January 21 to 25.

The CM will lead a high-powered delegation at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting beginning January 22. Over 2,500 leaders from industry, politics, art and civil society are expected to participate in this year’s meet.
Besides participating in discussions on future of urban development, employment generation and agriculture at the WEF, Chavan would also hold individual meetings with global business leaders to attract investments in Maharashtra. This includes meetings with information technology giants Microsoft and Facebook, sources said.

Chavan is also scheduled for meetings with manufacturing industry giants including Unilever, Diageo, General Electronics, Schindler, Volkswagen and Fafram, among others. “Requests for individual meetings have been sent to 30 business houses whose representatives are also to attend WEF meet,” a senior official said.

A visit to the Zurich airport is also on the anvil. “With Navi Mumbai international airport project in mind, Zurich airport authorities have invited the Maharashtra team to review facilities at its airport,” another official said. Chavan will also try to network with investors for development of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA).

Chavan will be accompanied by senior officials from the CMO, industries department, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

To woo investors, Chavan government has prepared a film highlighting the benefits of investing in projects in the state. A special docket has also been prepared to promote Maharashtra as an investment destination, sources said. The thrust will be on attracting investments in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and IT sectors.

Chavan will also be hosting a dinner for 30 business leaders on January 22. It is after a gap of six years that a CM from Maharashtra will visit Davos – the last being (late) Vilasrao Deshmukh, who visited in 2008. The theme for this year’s WEF meet is reshaping cities.
