The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee has finally approved a proposal for constructing an animal shed at Deonar abattoir.
Ignoring the protests of its BJP allies, the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC,on Tuesday, consented to the annual demand for a monsoon shed at the abattoir. The proposal was first brought before the committee three weeks ago but was held back owing to the BJPs protests.
BJP leader and standing committee member Dilip Lande, raising the issue that the goats were sold outside the limits against the Municipal Corporation Act rules, objected to the proposal. The civic administration is not answering the bigger question. The practice will continue if the shed is allowed to be built, he said. Fellow corporator and member Manoj Kotak said,The proposal says the shed is for the monsoons but the monsoons are over so there is no need now – why should we pass this?
Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale, bringing the meeting to order, said,The issue of illegal sale of goats is unrelated. The BJP had raised this issue in the general body meeting and had even secured the support of the house. This is an annual request for a shed that has always been passed for the past ten years and there is no need to further it, said Shewale.
Every year, over a lakh goats are brought to be abbatoir and are used during Eid. When the goats come,it is our responsibility to ensure that they are taken care and they are kept in good conditions. The proposal says this is a monsoon shed. At present, the retreating monsoon on and hence a shed is required, said Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani.
