An understaffed Railway Protection Force (RPF) is set to recruit 517 personnel in the Mumbai divison, soon. Officials, however, say that despite the recruitment, the RPF would still require more personnel on railway stations and inside local trains.
A senior RPF officer said the additional 517 constables will fill only 50 per cent of the actual requirement. In addition, some of these 517 new constables will be also deployed for clerical work.
“After two months of training, the Mumbai division may still not have all new 517 constables on local trains and at railway stations for security and safety of commuters,” said the RPF officer.
At present, the Government Railway Police is deputed inside women’s compartments in local trains at night while the understaffed RPF handles security and safety in the day time.
The constables are currently being trained at Hoshiyarpur in Punjab.“The Indian Railways had selected 17,000 constables across the country and they have been sent for training. Of these 17,000, the Mumbai division will have 517,” said a senior official from CR.
The training includes arms and ammunition handling, as well as theoretical knowledge. “During the course, they will be trained to handle all kinds of arms and ammunition including pistols, revolvers and AK-47. They are also given information on the Railway laws as well as detailed information on various railway departments,” he added.
