Bolton chairman Gartside to visit city

Bolton Wanderers Football Club Chairman Phil Gartside will be visiting Mumbai to facilitate the English club’s sports education partnership with an Indian IT firm St Angelo’s Oce. The event is being held to launch a ten-day residential football development camp for children at the Reebok stadium,the home of Bolton Wanderers. According to a media release,the club and their Indian partners hope to provide a boost to Indian football enthusiasts by exposing students to the international football arena through a 10-day residential football coaching and personality development camp in England. Gartside is a businessman who joined Bolton’s board in April,1989. He is also a member of the board for the English Football Association (FA) and the executive-director of the new Wembley Stadium.

Patil,Kothari star for Merchant XI

Vijay Manjrekar XI’s medium-pace and spin combination of Shreyas Patil and Karsh Kothari respectively played a decisive role in bowling out Dattu Phadkar XI for 140 for nine on the second day of the third round of the 28th Sportstar Trophy MCA U-19 Selection Trial Tournament. Phadkar XI,for whom Gaurish Jadhav remained unbeaten on a watchful 47 off 125 balls at number seven,hit back by restricting their opponent to 134-8 in the second innings at Karnataka SA ground.

Results: Vijay Manjrekar XI 149 and 134/8 (Ajinkya Parte 44,Shams Mulani 31; Yash Chavan 3/40) vs Dattu Phadkar XI 140 all out (Gaurish Jadhav 47; Shreyas Patil 3/48,Karsh Kothari 3/15); Khandu Rangnekar XI 163 and 82/1 (Pranay Patil 41) vs Vijay Merchant XI 153 all out(Salman Khan 52,Vijay Gohil 30; Dhrumil Matkar 3/35).

Nishad,Aditi to lead state teams

Pune’s Nishad Dravid and Aditi Mutatkar have been selected to lead the state men’s and women’s teams for the West Zone Badminton Championships,to be held at Chhatisgarh on October 6 and 7,2013. Former state player Mangrish Palekar will be the coach of the teams while Ashish Bajpai will serve as manager.

Squads: Men: Nishad Dravid,Subhankar Dey,Mayank Gole,Nigel D’Sa,Prashant Bahatare,Abhishek Kulkarni,Sudhanshu Medsikar,Harshad Bhagwat (Reserve); Women: Aditi Mutatkar,Rasika Raje,Varada Dixit,Mansi Gadgil,Riya Pillai; Junior Girls: Rasika Raje,Revati Devasthale,Ahillya Harjani,Vaishnavi Bhale; Junior Boys: Vighnesh Devlekar,Kabir Kanzarkar,Sushrut Karmarkar.

Rizvi win inter-collegiate football

Last year’s runners-up Rizvi College of Bandra won the Mumbai University men’s Inter-Collegiate Football title after they edged out Pillai College 5-4 via tie-breaker in a thrilling final at the Anna Bhau Sathe ground,Goregaon,on Saturday. Shadab Shaikh,Veeramallu Shrikant,Sagar Bedekar,Stephen Mervin and Altamash Sayed scored in the penalty shoot out for Rizvi while Manish Punjabi,Aniket Dhuri,Vaibhav Karpe,Jagjeet Reen reduced the margin by netting one each.

Both teams failed to score in regulation time leading to the penalty shootout.
