To bring down crime rates at railway stations, the Mumbai Police and Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched into joint patrolling for the last five days. A team of 100 police personnel will ensure the safety of commuters by patrolling on platforms at Dadar,CST and Bandra daily from 6 – 8 pm.
This move comes after a series of attacks on commuters were reported this year. Till July,166 cases of robbery,25 cases of molestation and five cases of obscene gestures have been reported. Most of the victims were women commuters.
The exercise, comprising nearly 100 police personnel is being undertaken at Dadar,CST and Bandra to sanitise railway station premises from drug addicts, hawkers, urchins and beggars at peak hours, said Prabhat Kumar,Commissioner of Police (Railways).
Each team comprising 12 personnel spends the first hour removing hawkers and drug addicts from platforms and footover bridges at the station. In the second hour,a smaller group of four police personnel guard compartments reserved for women to prevent incidents of molestation and robbery.
Prakash Kirdat, senior police inspector,Dadar GRP said,In the last five days we have managed to do away with drug addicts and hawkers from the station at the peak hours.
Interestingly, the members of the team walk together to draw the attention of commuters. This has been done purposely. At a crowded station like Dadar, having one policeman at one location is of little purpose. When commuters see a large team of police personnel patrolling the platform, they feel safe, adds Kirdat.
The initiative is a preventive exercise against crime against women. Its aim is to make women commuters feel safe, said,R R Redkar,Assistant Commissioner of Police (CST division).
