To mark Wildlife Week between October 1 and 7,city institutions such as Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP),Maharashtra Nature Park and Byculla Zoo have planned awareness rallies,exhibitions,drawing competitions and seminars.
SGNP will start its celebrations with a rally of schoolchildren and forest staff between 8 and 9 am on October 1. Later,the children will be taken on a nature trail,lion and tiger safaris and shown movies on wildlife.
Similar programmes will be organised for senior citizens on October 2,for NSS (National Service Scheme) and junior college students on October 3 and for teachers on October 5.
There will be an all-day,open-to-all logo-making competition by SGNP on October 3. There will also be a drawing competition for school students from classes 1 to 10 on October 5. The theme will be nature and wildlife. The celebrations will end with a panel discussion on man-animal conflict on October 7.
The idea is to create awareness among people,especially children,about the importance of nature and how it can be saved and conserved. All programmes will be open to public. The registration will be on the spot, said Nishikant Jha,one of the organisers and a professor at Thakur College.
To educate people about wildlife,Maharashtra Nature Park will hold an exhibition from October 3-15 and two seminars on wildlife conservation,dates for which have not been announced yet. Byculla Zoo will organise a drawing competition for schoolchildren on October 2 and an exhibition saying no to plastic on October 7.
