Two eight-year-old boys from Rabale in Navi Mumbai, who snuck into the rear of a truck while playing hide and seek, were initially presumed to have been kidnapped by the truck driver who drove them to Oshiwara on Wednesday.
However, when the police later went to Rabale to reunite the boys with their parents, they learnt that the children hid in the truck while playing and were driven to Oshiwara unknowingly by the driver.
A usual vegetable transportation trip turned into a nightmare for Daya Shankar Yadav (45) who found two children crying in his truck (MH 04 BC 4384). Yadav had left Kanhiya Nagar in Rabale in Thane at 6 pm on Wednesday and reached Oshiwara two hours later. When he opened the trucks tailgate,he saw the two boys.
Oshiwara police officers said at 9 pm on Wednesday,Yadav brought the two children to the police station. We assumed that Yadav had kidnapped the children and was making excuses to escape arrest,so we detained him on suspicion and began enquiring, said an officer, who did not wish to be named.
Since the children appeared scared, the officers only asked them for their names and address. The boys were identified as Sandeep Yadav and Rahul Pandey, who are residents of Kanhaiya Nagar. The officers took the children to Rabale and learnt that their parents had approached the police station there to file a missing persons complaint.
The police finally handed over the children to their parents at 3 am on Thursday. The boys then revealed that they were playing hide and seek in their locality and climbed into a truck parked there. While they were hiding,Yadav closed the tailgate and reached Andheri for delivery.
Based on the statements of the children, police began verifying their story. They contacted the vegetable supplier in Rabale and also tried to locate a few people who saw the boys climb into the truck. After the enquiries,we released the truck driver, said D Rupawate, senior police inspector of Oshiwara police station.
