Chided for getting drunk, man kills friend,is on run

A 21-year-old Navi Mumbai resident paid a heavy price for admonishing his friend for drinking to the point of vomiting.

A 21-year-old Navi Mumbai resident paid a heavy price for admonishing his friend for drinking to the point of vomiting. The friend, taking it as an insult, allegedly attacked him with a knife used for cutting sugarcane, killing him on the spot.

The suspect is currently absconding and the Sanpada police have launched a manhunt.

According to Sanpada police, the deceased has been identified as Mahendra Bharti (21),a resident of Sector Five,Sanpada. The police said Bharti had attended a party near the Seawoods complex along with six or seven friends, including the suspect who has only been identified as Omkar alias Gabbar at this point.

“One of the members of the group is a contractor and had recently completed an important job for a builder in Navi Mumbai. As a result, the builder invited him for a drink and told him to get his friends along if he wished. The contractor went there with Bharti,Omkar and some others. At the party,Omkar ended up drinking so much that he started vomiting. Bharti chided Omkar, saying he should not have had so much to drink if he could not handle it. This sparked off an argument between the two,” said senior police inspector Ramesh Katkar of Sanpada police station.

The argument was resolved temporarily, but started again once the group left the Seawoods complex. Omkar and Bharti were still arguing when they reached the sugarcane juice centre where Omkar worked and stayed.

“In the heat of the argument,Omkar grabbed a knife used for cutting sugarcane stalks and hacked at Bharti’s head. He sustained serious injuries to his head and died on the spot, while Omkar fled the scene,” Katkar added.

Bharti’s friends then took him to a nearby hospital and informed the police.

A complaint of murder has been registered against Omkar under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and a manhunt has been launched for him. Inquiries are also under way to find out if he has a past criminal record, the police said.
