Chhota Shakeel gang member Anil Mhatre was gunned down on Sunday in an encounter at Kalachowkie in south Mumbai,police said.
Mhatre,a sharp shooter,allegedly opened fire at the police who asked him to surrender after they surrounded him near Peninsula Tower following a tip-off. Mhatre was wanted in at least 22 cases including murder and extortion,Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria told PTI.
Maria further said that he was asked to surrender before the police when he opened fire at the officers. In self defence the police opened fire and Mhatre sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, Maria said adding that the shooter fired four rounds at the police which in retaliation fired three rounds.
