Cheating: Realty agent held

V P Road police on Wednesday arrested a real estate agent for allegedly promising a person a house in an upcoming tower in Grant Road and cheating him of Rs 18 lakh. The agent,Mangesh Mohite (48),is believed to be affiliated to a political party,investigators said.

Police said the victim,Kantilal Jain,had paid the amount in 2007 after Mohite promised him a house in an upcoming 20-storey buiding in the area.

“Jain paid the amount for a 225 sq ft house in Shreepati Towers in Grant Road. Despite waiting for many years,he was not given possession of the house. When the victim wanted him to return his money,Mohite and two of his associates delayed the payment. They finally obliged and gave Jain a cheque a while ago but it bounced,” said senior police inspector Rajendra Chavan.

“Following this,Jain approached us and showed us the evidence that clearly revealed that he had paid Mohite the amount. We registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. We arrested Mohite on Wednesday,” said Chavan. Mohite was produced in court and has been remanded in police custody till April 9,police said.

The police are also probing if Mohite’s associates had any role in the crime. “We will arrest them as well if we find any proof of their involvement,” said Chavan.
