Pritesh Doshi might have escaped the police if he had not made the mistake of writing his own name in the hotel register where he took the victim.

Senior police inspector Purushottam Gawande from the Charkop police said,“When we got to know that the accused had taken the victim to a hotel in Madh our team reached there. We saw that the accused had written the name Pritesh in the guest register. At the time,we did not realise that it might be the same Pritesh who has been arrested many times by the police for cases of chain snatching. The reason behind this was Pritesh had not been involved in any crime except chain snatching.”

As per Gawande, after the case was registered, the police officials realised that the chain snatcher who had been arrested by them some months ago had a similar way of signing his name. “I was discussing the case with my officers when one of them, who had seen Pritesh sign his name on a statement written about his chain-snatching crimes, remembered the similarity between the handwriting and the signature pattern. When he brought it to my notice,we immediately dug up the old statements and compared his signature with the one in the hotel register and found them to be the same.” After that, his photograph which was there in the police records, was shown to the victim who immediately identified him.

“From there on it was an easy task to nab Pritesh as his address was known in our records. We immediately formed a team and nabbed him from his house. He confessed to kidnapping and raping the victim. The Crime Branch officials came to the police station for a parallel investigation and informed us about the same modus operand used in the kidnap and molestation of a Bollywood actor’s daughter. We grilled him about it and he confessed his role in that offence later,” added Gawande.
