Chargesheet filed against five accused

3 of them are also chargesheeted in the photojournalist’s gangrape case

The city police’s Crime Branch Tuesday filed a 365-page chargesheet before the Esplanade Court against five people who had allegedly raped a 19-year-old telephone operator in the Shakti Mills compound at Mahalaxmi on July 31 this year.

Three of the five accused in the case have also been chargesheeted for the August 22 gangrape of a photojournalist inside the abandoned Shakti Mills compound.

The July 31 gangrape victim had approached the police only after the August 22 gangrape was reported in the media. In her statement,she spoke of how the rapists had threatened to kill her and her boyfriend if they raised an alarm and had asked them to “cooperate”. Mocking the victim,one of the accused allegedly boasted of his love affairs and how he had slit his wrists for his love in the past. The slash mark on his wrist is part of the evidence mentioned in the chargesheet. In the chargesheet,the victim speaks of her fear that made her and her boyfriend travel to Chhattisgarh and seek medical help following the attack.

The victim,who was passing by Shakti Mills with her boyfriend,halted there for sometime after she injured her leg. Two of the accused then assaulted them. While the victim’s boyfriend was beaten up and dragged to another corner in the compound with his hands tied up,the victim was raped in turns by five accused,including a minor.


The chargesheet has been filed against Salim Ansari,Mohammed Qasim alias Bangali,Vijay Jadhav,Ashfaque Shaikh and a juvenile. Of the five,Shaikh and the juvenile are not involved in the photo- journalist’s rape case. The Crime Branch has booked all the accused for gangrape,unnatural offences,conspiracy,criminal intimidation,and other offences under the IPC.

All the accused,barring the juvenile,were present before the court and were handed over copies of the chargesheet by magistrate Uday Padwad.

In her statement,the victim has said she was too scared to even speak to her mother,and had decided to shift away for a few days for medical treatment. When the severely injured victim could not get proper treatment,she and her boyfriend decided to return to Mumbai. The victim then contacted her mother and told her about the incident,she has said in her statement. In all,police have recorded 56 statements in the case,including that of the victim,her boyfriend and her mother. Besides these,the chargesheet also contains the medical report of the victim,call records of the accused and their test identification parades conducted at Arthur Road Jail.
