Changing City: Operations on phase 2 of Mumbai Metro Line 3 getting ready as trial run begins
The new underground stretch Mumbai Metro Line 3 with six stations will cover an additional 9.77 km from Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli.

The much-awaited second phase of the underground Mumbai Metro Line 3, connecting Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, is set to begin commercial operations. This new stretch with six stations will cover an additional 9.77 km. The trial run on this stretch is ongoing. Currently, over 11 km of the underground Metro Line 3, from Aarey to BKC, is operational.
The first phase of Metro Line 3, also called Aqua Line, was opened last year, offering a new underground experience for commuters between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey JVLR.

Challenges:
A section of the Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk passes through a twin tunnel under the Mithi River, which requires advanced tunneling techniques such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

Why Phase 2 ends at Acharya Atre Chowk:
After Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the next crossover for trains to change tracks and return to the Aarey Depot is at Acharya Atre Chowk. Therefore, Phase 2 will operate up to this station, with the final stretch to Colaba expected to open by June.
Administration speaks:
“Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has commenced the train trial movement for Phase 2 from Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk stretch, covering 9.77 km, which includes six stations. The second phase will be commissioned only after an inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) in March,” said an MMRC spokesperson.
