Chain-snatcher arrested,cops hunt for aide

Two chain snatchers allegedly had a field day on Sunday robbing victims of gold chains and other valuables from different parts of the city.

Two chain snatchers allegedly had a field day on Sunday robbing victims of gold chains and other valuables from different parts of the city. According to the police,the duo on a motorcycle were on a spree snatching gold chains and mangalsutras in the Mira Road,Vakola,Dahisar and Andheri areas.

While one of the accused,Wasim Aziz Qureshi (27) has been arrested by the Andheri police. Samir Shaikh (27) managed to evade arrest by making a speedy getaway on his bike. The ornaments robbed by the accused are estimated to be worth Rs 2.6 lakh.

According to the police,the accused were on a Hero Honda CBZ (MH-02 AB5672). After taking a U-turn from the Kala Nagar Junction on the Western Express Highway,they allegedly attacked the complainant Pranjal Farate’s wife. She was travelling in a taxi with her family,and after a minor scuffle,the accused allegedly snatched a gold chain and fled from the spot.

However,owing to police nakabandi on the highway at Andheri,one of the accused was nabbed by the police. The police have recovered gold chains,mangalsutras and Saudi Arabian currency amounting to Rs 18,120.

Qureshi was produced before the Andheri metropolitan magistrates court and has been remanded to police custody till July 27 for further interrogation.

Senior Police Inspector Pradeep Gosavi of Andheri police station said,“We are not ruling out the presence of a large network of such criminals. Right now,only two offenders are visible,but similar incidents keep happening that go unnoticed. The Deputy Commissioner of Police has set up a network involving Detection Officer and two subordinate officers from every police station to nab the absconding accused and trace the network. Both these accused have previous criminal records at various police stations for dacoity,robbery and chain-snatching.”
