The Central Railway has renamed Seawoods-Darave, a Mumbai local train station on the harbour line, as Seawoods-Darave-Karave, formally adding the name of Karave village, which officials said had been left out when the station was first christened.

The notification announcing the new name, issued by the office of the railway’s chief commercial manager (passenger marketing) on November 29, follows a request from the Maharashtra Government and approval by the surveyor-general of India.

According to officials, the Seawoods Estate in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, was developed on the land parcels of two villages, Darave and Karave. However, when the station opened, only Seawoods and Darave were included in its official title. “Karave was always part of the geographical identity of the area, but it was not reflected in the station name. The new nomenclature corrects that omission,” a railway official said.

A government notification dated November 6, 2025, sought the inclusion of Karave in the station’s name to ensure administrative consistency across land records, urban development maps, and transport infrastructure. The Survey of India subsequently approved the spelling in all three scripts, which the railways have now notified as—Marathi: सीवूड्स-दारावे-करावे, in Hindi: सीवूड्स-दारावे-करावे, and in English: Seawoods-Darave-Karave.

While the numerical station code (01827117) will remain unchanged, the alphabetical station code has been revised from SWDV to SWDK. Railway divisions across Mumbai, Bhusaval, Nagpur, Solapur, and Pune have been directed to update signage, passenger reservation systems, and ticketing databases accordingly.

Officials said the updated nomenclature will now appear across all digital platforms, including the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), reservation charts, and online ticketing systems, in a phased manner. Physical signboards at the station will be replaced after the completion of internal approvals and fabrication processes.
