CCI chief shooting: cops not convinced by misfire theory

Though his family had maintained that Kanwaljeet Rajpal, the chief executive officer of the Cricket Club of India, was cleaning his 7.65 mm Indian-made pistol when it misfired, the police say all circumstantial evidence is against the theory of misfiring.

Police inspector Vilas Bhole, the investigating officer, said,“We have analysed the spot panchnama and we do not agree with the family’s version. If a person is cleaning his weapon, the circumstantial evidence will have cleaning material near the spot where the gun was found. We have had earlier cases of misfiring while cleaning the weapon, where the elements were found around the weopon. Also the manner in which the bullet was fired from beneath the chin indicates that there was some force in the direction the bullet was fired. We are still awaiting the medical report.”

Bhole also said the case requires tactical investigation as “in this case, the injured is the only witness. The bullet has injured him so badly that we will have to wait for some time till we can record any statement.”

The police have recorded the statements of three of his family members — Rajpal’s wife, his son and daughter — who have maintained that he had misfired when he was cleaning his licensed pistol. The theory, the police state,is difficult to believe as Rajpal had just returned from his anticipatory bail hearing at the sessions court around 6.15 pm,minutes after which the incident took place. A person who has just returned from court will first settle down rather than sitting down to clean his weapon, they surmise.

At the Bombay Hospital,Kanwaljeet Rajpal is still under intensive observation and is critical. According to hospital authorities,he is not in any position to give a statement to the police.

Rajpal had moved an anticipatory bail plea after a female member of the club alleged that he had sent her an obscene e-mail in 2007 and had been allegedly sending her lewd messages and also harassing her since then. The matter was being investigated by the cyber crime cell of the Mumbai Police and the court is expected to hear Rajpal’s bail plea on Monday.

When asked if the bail or the cyber crime complaint has any bearing on the case,Bhole said,“Till now the matter has not come on record anywhere, either in the statements or in any other evidences,so we cannot comment on that. We will look in that direction only after we finish the investigation into events that occurred immediately before Rajpal walked into his bedroom and fired the pistol.”
