A new forensic laboratory exclusively for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was inaugurated at Belapur in Navi Mumbai on Monday .

Aiming at helping the central agency to expedite investigations, the regional Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) office is a well-equipped laboratory with equipment worth over Rs 1.5 crore and facilities to conduct polygraph tests,Government Examiner Questioned Documents (GEQD) to know the veracity of documents, fingerprint machines etc. It also has a dedicated photo department for keeping a database of crime scene photographs.

The 3,000-sq ft laboratory, inaugurated by Special Director of CBI (headquarters) V K Gupta, was scheduled to kickstart work by the end of 2010. The agency, which has been actively looking into major cases such as the Adarsh Co-operative housing society scam, had to approach a private entity to decode data collected during investigations.

“A local centre will only help us tide over delays caused due to the absence of scientific experts. Also we will have our own experts to help us build the case and will come handy during the trial,” said a senior CBI official.

The CBI is also awaiting another 10-storeyed building with a 6,836-sq m built-up area in Bandra-Kurla-Complex,which it claims will house interrogation facilities, forensic labs and facilities to train personnel to tackle new-age crimes, under one roof.

Document verification and polygraph tests of cases investigated by the CBI in Pune,Nagpur,Goa and Gandhinagar in Gujarat will also be conducted here.
