Until five years ago, the concept of a casting director was a novel one. Very few filmmakers thought that finding actors to fit a part needed a professional dedicated to the task and would usually assign the job to their assistant directors. Much has changed since then and the recent surge in fresh talent in Bollywood is being attributed to the emergence of casting directors.
Now, Mukesh Chhabra is hoping to add to this existing trend. A prominent casting director, with films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Shahid and Kai Po Che to his credit, Chhabra is launching his casting studio today. Located in Aram Nagar in Andheri West, Mukesh Chhabra Casting Company is a creative space, says the casting director. Here, aspiring actors will be able to walk in for screen test anytime, which will be recorded and filed away for future use by Chhabra’s team.
“Actors had started to feel that casting directors are unapproachable. They would struggle to get a meeting with one or show them their showreel. Part of the problem is that most casting directors don’t have a dedicated space and work out of the offices of the film’s makers. This studio space will address that problem,” explains Chhabra.
However, the biggest advantage of the space, he adds, is the weekly and monthly acting workshops that will be conducted at the premises for aspiring actors, free of charge. “They will be informed about their strengths and weaknesses, tutored on the way forward,” explains Chhabra, who hopes his venture will help create a talent pool for the industry.
