The Vikhroli police and the Mumbai Crime Branch officials have arrested a driver working for Cool Cab and two rickshaw drivers for carjacking a cab owned by Meru Cab Company on April 4 and robbing its driver. During their interrogation, the Cool Cab driver confessed that he was jealous of the Meru Cab Company as it makes good profits and had committed the crime in a fit of anger.

At midnight on last Saturday,Manoj Gupta who works as a driver with Meru Cab Company Pvt Ltd had parked his cab at Thane and was waiting for passengers. Three men approached him and asked whether he could take them to Mumbai Central.

“Gupta agreed and started driving the cab towards Mumbai Central via the Eastern Express Highway. As the cab was nearing Godrej Company in Vikhroli, one of the men whipped out a knife and pointed it at Gupta. After robbing him of Rs 1,600,a gold chain and a mobile phone, they threw him out of the cab. The cab was later abandoned under the bridge near the Ghatkopar railway station. We recovered the cab the same day after receiving a complaint from Gupta,” said Assistant Police Inspector V R Patil.

The case was then handed over to the Crime Branch who arrested the three accused. The accused were identified as Mushtaq Jamaluddin Khan alias Pappu (42),Hamid Ali Babban Pathan alias Baba (26) and Mohammed Shabbir Sheikh (23). While Khan is working with Cool cab as a driver,Pathan and Sheikh are autorickshaw drivers.

“During investigation,Khan claimed that it was jealousy that made him commit the crime. Khan’s business was reportedly in trouble as many passengers opted to travel in Meru cabs. He claimed that he only intended to threaten the Meru cab driver. But then there was no need to rob him,” said Patil.
