The arrest of a man who was driving a stolen vehicle at Jogeshwari a couple of days ago led to the arrest of five other men involved in a murder. The arrested accused spilled the beans on the murder of the vehicles driver committed by the men to steal the vehicle.
As per the officials of DCP squad,Zone 9,they received confidential information on Monday about a gang of three criminals who were roaming in the Jogeshwari area near the 24 Karat theatre to find a customer for the stolen vehicle,an Innova.
A trap was laid and the team intercepted the vehicle. Though two men managed to flee, the team arrested the third man, later identified as Pravin Nimse (22), said additional CP (West Region) Archana Tyagi. During interrogation,Nimse, who thought that he had been arrested for the murder of the driver that he and his accomplices had committed, told the officials about how he and his accomplices had hired the vehicle a few days ago from Sion Junction for taking it to Pune. On reaching Pune they murdered the driver,Amol Kamte. The vehicle contained a few clothes,a pair of chappals and blood stains on the back seat which raised our suspicions about the murder story being true. From the Pune police we got to know that such a murder was registered there after the police found the body of Kamte near the Talegaon toll naka, said Tyagi.
The police also traced the other five accomplices. The five have been identified as Bharat Bote (20),Ubed Khan Pathan (29),Sohail Khan (23),Javed Sayyad (28) and Mohammad Rafique Bairi (29). Police enquiries have revealed that Bairi was the ring leader of the gang. They all had known each other for the past few years. At the time of arrest, the three men had killed Kamte and were on their way back to Mumbai in search of a customer for the vehicle. We have also recovered 8 bikes,a tempo which they would use for transporting the stolen bikes and the Innova from the six arrested accused, said Nitin Patil police sub inspector.

As per Patil, the gang might have committed other murders too by hiring vehicles for journeys and killing the driver for the purpose of stealing the vehicle. Though we have no evidence to suggest that yet,we suspect that the gang might be involved in other such crimes. They have been remanded to police custody till May 25. We shall be conducting further enquiries in the matter, added Patil.
