A 20-year-old cancer patient admitted to Tata Memorial Hospital a week ago allegedly committed suicide there Wednesday night, the police said.

A case of accidental death has been registered at Bhoiwada police station. “He has not left behind any suicide note,” said senior inspector Sunil Tondwalkar of Bhoiwada police station.

The deceased,Kapil Deb Roy,a native of Bangladesh, was first admitted to the hospital in September for a week for the treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia,a type of blood cancer in which the body produces excess immature white blood cells.

Later,Roy was readmitted on October 1 after he complained of fever. “He had high fever and his platelet count was low,” a source from the hospital said. Hospital authorities said Roy had gone to washroom at 10 pm on Wednesday. When he did not return after 15 minutes, the sister-in-charge was alerted.

“The police were then called by security, who broke open the door and found him hanging by a towel,” the source said. He was declared dead at 10.30 pm.
