When Chandrakant Redekar (40),a taxi driver from Bhayandar, took Kunal Vastani (23),a passenger, from Dahisar check-naka on Tuesday morning, little did he know that the ride will turn out to be one of the most eventful trips of his life.
An alert Redekar with the help of his friends from a local Shiv Sena shakha managed to foil an alleged kidnapping attempt that Vastani,a computer software engineer hailing from Hyderabad, was planning to perpetrate on his cousin,a 17-year-old girl, studying in a suburban college. While the Borivali police have arrested Vastani under the provisions of Arms Act (he was caught with three knives in his possession),a case of attempt to kidnap has not yet been registered as the family of the girl has not agreed to register an FIR.
Around 6 am,Vastani got into my cab from the Dahisar check-naka and asked me to take him to Madhusudan Apartments in Haridas Nagar at Borivali (west). After reaching there,he asked me to wait. According to him,a girl had to join him for trip to Goa.
However,Redekar grew suspicious when he saw Vastani taking out a dagger from his bag and pouring chloroform on to a handkerchief. Suspecting a foul play,I called up some of my friends who were at a nearby Sena shakha, said Redekar.

His friends swung into action and enquired about the girl. Finally, they managed to trace her house with the help of the description that Vastani had given Redekar during a talk. After tracing the house,we told the girls family members that a youth was waiting for their daughter. The girl was supposed to go for her coaching classes at 7 am,but she could not go for the classes for some reason. We asked the girl to go down on the pretext of leaving for her college, said Sunil Salkhe,Redekars friend. When the girl came down from her building,Vastani rushed towards her with a dagger. We managed to subdue him before he could harm the girl, said Salkhe. Vastani was later handed over to the Borivali police.
DCP Sanjay Bannerjee said,We are probing into incident. However, another police officer said on condition of anonymity,The parents of the girl do not wish to register a complaint. The family members of the girl were unavailable for comment.
