Bypolls for five seats in Maharashtra legislative council to be held on March 27: EC

The bypolls were necessitated after five Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) were elected as MLAs in the 2024 Assembly elections

The 288 MLAs will exercise their votes for the appointment of MLCs

The Election Commission of India Monday announced that bypolls for the five seats in Maharashtra Legislative Council will be held on March 27.

The voting will be held the day after the four-week Budget Session of the Assembly concludes on March 26. The bypolls were necessitated after five Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) were elected as MLAs in the 2024 Assembly elections.

These five MLCs include three from BJP— Praveen Datke, Gopichand Padalkar, Ramesh Karad — and one each from NCP (SP) (Rajesh Vitekar) and Shiv Sena (Amisha Padvi).

While Padvi’s term in the Legislative Council is till July 7, 2028, Vitekar’s term is till July 27, 2030. The tenure of Praveen Datke, Ramesh Karad and Gopichand Padalkar will end on May 13, 2026. The ECI will issue a notification on the bypolls on March 10.

While nominations have to be filed by March 17, the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 20. The polling will be held between 9 am and 4 pm on March 27, and the votes will be counted at 5 pm on the same day.

The 288 MLAs will exercise their votes for the appointment of MLCs. The total strength in the state council is 78. Currently, BJP has 19 MLCs; followed by NCP, Congress and Sena (UBT) with seven each; Shiv Sena with six; NCP (SP) three and independents three. As many as 26 seats are vacant.
