A 32-year-old man was allegedly caught while breaking into a house in Sion and assaulted by a mob of residents Sunday morning. He was then handed over to the police who took him to the hospital, where he died while under treatment. Police have registered a complaint of culpable homicide against unidentified persons and are questioning the residents of the area. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Das,a resident of neighbouring Rahul Nagar locality. He washed cars for a living, police said.

According to Sion police, the incident occurred in the Sanjay Gandhi Nagar area around 2.30 am. Tilakram Chavan, who stays in one of the several single storey structures, woke up when he felt someone step on his legs, and saw three men moving towards the door stealthily. Chavan raised an alarm and within minutes, the entire locality woke up.

“With a spate of burglaries, residents of the area have been on the edge for several weeks. The last incident occurred only five days ago. While two of the three burglars managed to flee,Das couldn’t. By this time,he was surrounded by the residents,” said senior inspector B Z Gavit.

Gavit said the sequence of events after this was unclear as there was chaos and the area was dark. However, the mob beat up Das with whatever they could lay their hands on. Amid the chaos,a resident called the police control room, who relayed the information to the Sion police, and a team rushed to the spot.

“Das was bound by a rope when our team reached the spot. He was taken to Sion hospital and died under treatment around 11.15 am,” said Gavit.

A doctor with the Sion hospital said the death was caused due to haemorrhaging shock and multiple contusions.

Sion police have so far questioned around 20 to 25 people from the area, but they claim that they were not part of the mob, said an officer.
