A scaffolding that was erected to carry out repair works in a building at Marine Lines collapsed on Friday morning, injuring two persons.

The incident was reported around 8.25 am on Friday at Mehkar House, situated near Shamal Das Junction, which is the intersection of Princess Street and Marine Lines. The injured has been identified as Arjun Kha (26) and Bapun Shaikh (20), and they were rushed to GT hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.

Civic officials said the building is an old MHADA property that has been vacated for repairs and scaffolding was erected for carrying out civil works. The officials said the scaffolding had collapsed, leading to the portion of a wall falling down, which eventually injured two persons.

“This building had gone under redevelopment. The building was empty and the two injured persons were workers who were involved in the repair works,” said a civic official. The officials maintained that the scaffolding might have collapsed after it lost its hold on the walls since they become slippery during the rains.

“At present, the entire spot has been barricaded for safety purposes,” said the official.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a Level 1 fire was reported in the Orchid Suburbia residential building in Kandivali (west). The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said the blaze was reported from the 16th floor of the 22-storey building.

MFB officials said no injury was reported since the flat was empty. However, the presence of combustible items like furniture, curtains intensified the flames which led to the apartment getting gutted. The officials said that the actual cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. However, they suspect that the blaze may have erupted due to a short-circuit.
