Investigations against builder Clarence Pereira, accused of raping his domestic help several times over the past year, have revealed that he used the victim’s daughter to blackmail her into silence, police sources alleged on Sunday.
Pereira, a builder who also runs a luxury bus service, was arrested on Friday by the Bandra police for cheating two women of Rs 12 lakh. His help subsequently approached the Khar police and alleged that he had raped her at gunpoint a year ago and had raped her several times since then.
“After the first occasion, Pereira told the victim that if she told anyone about the exploitation, or if she did not consent, he would target her daughter, who is a minor. He used this threat to make her bow to his demands, and the victim only gathered the courage to speak out after his arrest,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Shivajirao Kolekar, Bandra division.
Pereira is alleged to have taken Rs 3 lakh from a fashion designer and Rs 9 lakh from his own receptionist, which he never paid back, and they ultimately approached the police and registered a case of cheating against him. He also allegedly made some indecent remarks towards the fashion designer, and later apologised to her when she took offense.
“Pereira has been remanded in police custody till August 27, and we are currently analysing the transactions of his bank accounts to find out what he did with the money that he took from the complainants. His Call Data Records are also being analysed to check for any exchange of calls or text messages which might prove relevant to the case. There have also been some cases of cheque bouncing against him in the past, and we are still working on how many and what kind of cases he has against him,” Kolekar added.
The Khar police will be seeking Periera’s custody after the Bandra police completes its investigations against him.
