Vinit Indulkar and veteran Shitanshu Kotak scored sixties while playing crucial roles in Bharat Petroleum Sports Club’s entry into the semifinals of the KC Mahindra Memorial Shield Invitation Cricket Tournament on Wednesday.

Indulkar top-scored with 66 and Kotak added 61 as Bharat Petroleum, who were put into bat, reached 220/7 in their stipulated 41 overs. In response,Tata Sports Club fell agonizingly short by just three runs despite the efforts of Nikhil Patil Jr,who scored 64,and Tushar Gharat. Kiran Adhav’s 3/46 stood out as Bharat Petroleum sneaked into the last-four stage in the nail-biting finish.

Meeting the petroleum outfit in the semifinal will be Dr DY Patil Sports Club ‘A’ following their massive victory over Air-India. Strangely none of the batsmen in the DY Patil line-up crossed the half-century mark, but there were useful contributions throughout with Yogesh Takawale top-scoring with his 45. A target of 309 always seemed a tall order for Air-India and they succumbed to the pressure rather tamely, being bowled out for just 123 with Anupam Sankhleja starring with figures of 4/22.

Asad Pathan smashed 112,meanwhile,as Western Railway saw off a strong Indian Oil Sports Club by a 52 runs. Pathan’s century took the railmen up to 296,and despite possessing the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Wasim Jaffer in their ranks,Indian Oil were bowled out for 244 with over four overs remaining. Rahane and Jaffer did score half-centuries to their credit, but their scores of 81 and 69 respectively were only in vain.

The only team to complete a successful run-chase on the day were Jain Irrigation who stumbled a little but eventually were taken over the line by Aamir Bhorania’s unbeaten 63. Dr DY Patil Sports Club ‘B’ had earlier been bowled out for 205 with Mehul Ingle with 4/39 and Akshay Darekar (3/18) the wreckers-in-chief.

Bhorania took charge of the response from there on with Amit Patil and Rohit Rane contributing useful thirties.
