The police investigating the kidnapping of a 24-year-old woman from Goregaon (East) a day earlier, learnt on Thursday that she had called her boyfriend and asked him to pick her up a few minutes before her supposed abduction. Further investigations revealed that the entire kidnapping had been staged.

The woman had claimed that on Wednesday, she was abducted near her house, molested and looted, and then abandoned in Malwani five hours later. However, investigations allegedly revealed that her claims were false.

On Thursday night, police arrested the woman’ alleged boyfriend Mangesh Breed who allegedly confessed that the two wanted to spend time together, and since her girlfriend was drunk and could not return home, they had staged the kidnapping. The police found the woman’s jewellery with Breed, and had arrested him for robbery.

Police said,on Wednesday the woman met Breed near a temple and changed into a fresh pair of clothes from her night dress. The couple spent the day together and even had drinks, the police said. In the evening, the woman changed back into her night dress and went to Malwani, where she lied to the police that she had been abandoned by her ‘kidnappers’ at Marve Road, police added.

The police had registered a case of kidnapping after the in-laws received a call from her saying that she had been abducted. However, during investigations, police got suspicious when they found loopholes in her statement.
