The Vakola police detained a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday for allegedly clicking obsene pictures and videos of a 14-year-old girl.

The police, however, have not been able to recover the videos from the mobile phone of the boy.

According to the police, the boy was named a suspect based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family. On Tuesday, the boy surrendered at the police station but refused to have committed the crime.

“We have seized the mobile phone of the boy which was used to shoot the videos of the girl, but the data has been deleted. We have now sent the phone for forensic analysis to recover the deleted data,” said Vilas Joshi, senior police inspector of the Vakola police station.

The girl’s family had approached the police a month ago when the video was forwarded to the girl’s uncle by one of his neighbours in Kalina, Santacruz (east).

The girl’s uncle had confronted the sender, who confessed to him that he had received the video clipping from the accused. The girl’s parents and uncle had then brought the boy to the police station who had revealed the name of the accused. The video clip was then deleted. The family of the girl alleged that the police took more than a month to register an FIR against the accused, who is their neighbour. The girl’s father had claimed that he had often caught the boy peeping into their bathroom and had warned him on several occasions.

The police said most of the time the accused kept his mobile phone on the shaft of the exhaust fan in the girl’s bathroom to shoot her while taking bath.

According to a statement given by the victim’s father to the Vakola police station, the accused was caught stalking his daughter on her way to school and had warned him. However, when the family found out about the video clip, they approached the police.

The investigating officer said as soon as the complaint was filed, they had recorded the statements of three minor boys who had received the video, after which they started the search for the accused. “The boy has been sent to Dongri children’s home. It is suspected that he has made videos of other girls in the locality as well. It will be clear after we receive the forensic report,” said the officer.

The boy has been detained under various sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offense Act and IT Act.
