Bookies arrested in Borivali

TWO bookies were arrested and produced in court Friday after they were caught taking bets for the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils Thursday,police said.

TWO bookies were arrested and produced in court Friday after they were caught taking bets for the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils Thursday,police said.

The duo,identified as Kantilal Shah (48) and Mohammed Hussain (50),were arrested by Unit 11 of Mumbai police Crime Branch from Borivali. They have been booked for forgery and cheating under various sections of Indian Penal Code. Police have also added sections of Indian Telegraph Act after they seized five mobile phones from the spot.

“We kept a watch till we were sure that betting was in progress. The duo was using the premises of Mint ice-cream shop to ensure they were not caught. We found them to be watching a sports channel and calculating tabs,” said Raghunath Dalvi,Senior Inspector,Mumbai Crime Branch.

Police have also seized a television set and Rs 53,650 in cash.

The two have been remanded in police custody till April 22.

“Betting is rampant during IPL matches. The volume of illegal transactions through betting syndicates is usually high during these matches,” said Ambadas Pote,Deputy Commissioner of Police.
