A Local court Wednesday acquitted a Mumbai blasts accused in an assault case. Aatif Mulla, accused of criminal conspiracy in the bomb blasts at Mulund, Vile Parle and Mumbai Central, was also facing charges of assaulting a police officer in 2003. According to the prosecution, Mulla’s brother tried to assault a police escort when the police denied to let him hand over a tiffin box to Mulla.
“The brother of the accused then caught the collar of one police and gave him a push. Mulla tried to free his hand and tried to take a rifle from a police guard,” the prosecution’s brief read. The police also alleged that Mulla’s relatives had gathered on the spot and were instigating Mulla to ran away from police custody.

Defending Mulla, advocate Sharif Shaikh had argued that there was a four-hour delay in registering the FIR and no effort to record the statement of any independent witness in the case. All the witnesses were police personnel who were party to the alleged altercation.
Mulla also maintained that the prosecution’s case was entirely false and he was the victim of the assault. “I had injuries and I was not given any treatment,” he claimed.
