Body of woman tourist who drowned near Bandra Fort found after 20 hours

The body of a woman tourist who drowned in the Arabian Sea near Bandra Fort on Sunday evening was found on Monday afternoon, the disaster management cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed.

The deceased has been identified as Jyoti Shonar, 27. According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was reported around 5 pm near Bandra Fort. The body was recovered by the Mumbai Coast Guard at around 1 pm on Monday, after a 20-hour rescue operation and was handed over to the Mumbai Police. It was then sent to Bhabha Hospital, Bandra.

MFB officials said the woman had arrived from Navi Mumbai with her friends to visit Bandra Fort. An official privy to details of the rescue operation said, “The body was rescued by the Coast Guard which was leading the operation along with the police. Due to the monsoon, there is a variation in the tidal pattern due to which the rescue operation became difficult. There was low tide today (Monday) after 11 am. Soon after, the body was recovered.”
