The BMC’s probe into the alleged irregularities committed by the Highway Construction Company to bag the contract for the penguin enclosure will take at least another week.

Earlier this month, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had ordered a probe led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kiran Achrekar into the contractor Highway Construction Company, which allegedly submitted fake recommendation letters to meet the norms of the tender.

Meanwhile, the BMC is trying to complete the construction of the enclosure by the time the contract expires on December 21. “The acrylic glass which will be used in the enclosure is yet to be imported and the delivery of some raw material has also been delayed owing to the cash crunch,” said the official.

Terming the delay deliberate, leader of opposition Pravin Chheda said, “The BMC has failed to comply with the time limit given by the Lokayukta and is delaying the inquiry to hide its faults. At the next hearing, I will demand for an independent inquiry.”
