BMC relaxes bridge repair norms

With none of the contractors willing to repair bridges before monsoon by using new technology,the civic body has now relaxed norms by allowing a contractor to use the old method to repair pot-holes on bridges.

The civic administration has also dropped the idea of repairing three of the four dangerous bridges before monsoon. Of the four special bridges,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now carry out repair work only on the Kavi Keshavsut flyover,popularly known as Dadar TT flyover.

The bridge had been poorly maintained for some time. The repair work will not be done by the expert -standing technical advisory committees (STAC) recommended mastic asphalt but by using the traditional hot-mix system. According to Rahul Shewale,Standing Committee chairman,“All these buildings were in urgent need of repairs,especially Dadar TT flyover. None of the contractors came forward to repair the bridges during the tender process,after which we have given the contract to a sub contractor without the tender process”. The contractor,will be undertaking repair works at the cost of Rs 45-50 lakh,said Shewale.

While the Dadar TT flyover will be repaired before monsoon,the remaining three — Currey Road,Elphinstone and JSS-will be taken up for repairs after monsoon.

The civic administration’s plan to resurface and repair four crucial bridges in the island city at a cost of Rs 9.8 crore had hit a roadblock due to contractors refusing to resurface the bridges before the monsoon.

Contractors had not participated in the tender to resurface and repair 15 bridges in the island city,two in the western suburbs and three in the eastern suburbs claiming that the conditions laid down by the civic body,of using mastic aspalt,were unreasonable.

The BMC’s standing technical advisory committee (STAC) had,in its report three years ago,deemed 34 of the 57 bridges in the city highly dangerous.

The civic body currently maintains 14 flyovers and 37 railway overbridges. The civic administration also spends Rs 40 crore every year on pot-hole repairs.


‘Outdated’ BMC website draws corporators’ flak

THE “dodgy” and “unattractive” website of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has drawn flak from corporators. Mayor Sunil Prabhu will now convene a joint meeting with the BMC’s Information Technology (IT) department and direct them to revamp the BMC website \www.mcgm.gov.in and update it regularly.

The issue was raised by BJP group leader Dilip Patel at the general body meeting on Thursday. “BMC is Asia’s richest municipal body and it looks outdated and unattractive. We invest such a huge sum of money in our IT reforms. Why is it then that the website is hardly ever updated?” he asked.

The BMC website has been facing technical problems ever since it was started in 2007.

Even as it plans to bring in transparency by using the website more aggressively,the BMC is struggling to maintain the website. Prabhu said that IT officials should ensure that maximum information is made available to the citizens of Mumbai in an easy and accessible manner through the website.

“Apart from not updating the website regularly,BMC has not put up enough matter on it. The website needs a complete overhaul and a meeting regarding this will soon be convened,” he said.
