Decades-old temple in Dindoshi razed to make way for Goregaon Mulund Link Road Project

Even as the temple was beyond the GMLR roadmap, its location – along a curve – was creating a roadblock, hindering work on the ambitious project. “The width of the road is 45.7 metres i.e 150 feet wide. The temple is situated beyond the road line (planned route) of the GMLR. However, its location was such that it would have affected construction related works such as the segment launch. In a bid to facilitate traffic diversion, movement of construction related vehicles, launching of segments and other works, we had to remove the temple from the existing spot,” said a BMC official.

The demolition drive was undertaken smoothly with no resistance from the temple authorities.

A senior official told The Indian Express, “It was a nearly 40-50 year old Kali Mata temple. After checking all documents, the temple was found eligible and we have provided them with monetary compensation. Now, the temple is being relocated to an alternate location. The entire drive on Friday was carried out very peacefully.”

Eyeing to relieve traffic, the BMC is undertaking to construct the 12.2km-long GMLR, which will connect Goregaon in the western suburbs with Mulund in the eastern suburbs through a series of arterial roads, underground tunnels and bridges.

Speaking to Express, a civic official said, “The demolition of structures which are coming along the alignment is underway and it’s a gradual process. Overall, the GMLR falls under four wards, of which two are in the western suburbs and other two – T and S wards – in the eastern suburbs.”
