The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched the girders for the Bow-String arch, that will connect the coastal road with Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL), within a 1 hour and 25 minutes time span during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Civic officials said the process of launching the girders began around 2 am when the tidal conditions were not very high or very low. At first, the barge from which the bridge was launched was stabilised. Following this, the arch-shaped structure was erected and aligned with the two mating units. The entire process was completed around 3.25 am and municipal commissioner and state-appointed administrator Bhushan Gagrani was present during the operation.

Arjun Dhawan, vice chairman of HCC, which is the executing agency, said that this is the first time a girder was launched in an open sea condition for an infrastructure project in the country.

Weighing upto 2,000 MT and having a length of 136 metres, the girder is a prefabricated structure that was manufactured in Haryana and was transported to the Nhava Sheva port in Navi Mumbai, where it was assembled. Following this, the girders were transported from the port to the Worli work site in a barge.

Civic officials said that in the next phase concretisation works will be taken up soon after which asphalt roads will be laid.

Once this bridge becomes operational, vehicles will be able to enter the coastal road directly from the BWSL.

At present the coastal road is operational only between 8 am and 8 pm on weekdays for south-bound traffic and officials are aiming to make the entire road operational by May-end.
