Despite strong opposition from the NCP,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation gave its nod to the construction of seven underground parking lots,on Monday. The proposal was mired in controversy after it was alleged that the Sena-ruled BMC was favouring son-in-law of senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi by awarding the contract to his firm.
The Rs 444-crore proposal was approved in a meeting on Monday after civic officials gave a presentation on the importance of the parking lots and gave an overview of the project and the selection of the contractor. Following the presentation the NCP staged a walk out in protest. The BMC will now be funding the construction and will hand over the completed parking lots to the contractor joint venture of Venue Infrastructure Ltd and German WOHR Parking Systems (the Indian division for which is headed by Girish Vyas,Joshis son in law) for a period of 30 years for operation.
