BMC evacuates C1 buildings in Vikhroli for its first redevelopment project

According to civic officials, nearly 28 high-risk buildings which have been categorised as C-1 dilapidated in Vikhroli have been earmarked for the project.

To facilitate its first ever redevelopment project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday vacated three dilapidated buildings which are set to be demolished in the first phase of the redevelopment plan.

The civic body has charted plans to redevelop 28 buildings situated in Vikhroli’s Parksite area. This marks the first ever redevelopment project set to be executed by the BMC, which is proposed to be undertaken in two phases.

According to civic officials, nearly 28 high-risk buildings which have been categorised as C-1 dilapidated in Vikhroli have been earmarked for the project.

On Tuesday, the civic body demolished three of the buildings which are set to be redeveloped in the first phase which entails 9 high-risk buildings. So far, the BMC has already vacated five of the total first phase buildings.

Records show that at least 67 people resided in the three buildings which are set to be demolished. Officials maintained that the affected tenants have been rehabilitated at alternate flats earmarked for Project Affected Persons (PAP) in Bhandup. While the residents currently reside in 280 square-feet plans, the redevelopment project seeks to hand over flats measuring 405 square feet in the new project.

Data furnished by the BMC showed that the new project will encompass 23 floors of which 13 storeys have already been constructed.

The eviction drive on Tuesday was carried by the civic N ward.
