A cleaner employed with the BMC was arrested by the police on Thursday for allegedly driving his girlfriend to commit suicide, police said on Friday. The accused, Vijay Chandalia, had been in a relationship with Jyoti Khaple for the last one-year-and-a-half. The police said that Khaple, who worked as a maid servant and stayed at Wadar Chawl in Jogeshwari west, had been pressing Chandalia to marry her.
“The accused had promised to marry her, but later refused to do so. He had also been constantly harassing her,” said Subhash Khanvilkar, senior inspector, Oshiwara police station.
According to the police, Khaple committed suicide by hanging herself from a pipeline on the ceiling of her home on Thursday afternoon. Khanvilkar said that Khaple had left behind a note in which she wrote that Chandalia’s refusal to marry her had pushed her to take the step.
The police booked Chandalia with abetting suicide on a complaint registered by Khaple’s mother Suman, who discovered her daughter’s body at 4 pm on Thursday. Khanvilkar said that Chandalia, who lives in Amboli, was arrested on Thursday night.
