A law student jumped to death under a train Friday, leaving a suicide note about a man who,she wrote, had taken obscene photographs of her and blackmailed her into having sex with her. The man,a school dropout, was arrested by the Samta Nagar police Saturday for blackmail, rape and abetment to suicide.
The students body was found on the tracks in Borivli; the suicide note, running into three of four pages, was found at her home the next day. She was 24; the alleged blackmailer,Gopi Rawal,is 27 and married with children.
Rawal was working as a driver with a lawyer in Damu Nagar in Kandivli, where the student too lived. Chance had brought them together: the police said he had dialled a wrong number in August last year, got her on the line and started talking, the beginning of a friendship that later developed into a full-blown affair.
The girl recently got to know he was married with children and wanted to break the relationship. Rawal then blackmailed her with obscene photographs that he had clicked of her during the course of their affair, and threatened to make these public unless she consented to having sex with him, said Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Ramrao Pawar.
On July 15,she disappeared from home. Her parents filed a missing persons complaint at the Samta Nagar police station and the next day got a call informing them that the body of a girl matching the description had been found near Vasai railway station, said assistant police inspector Sunil Zawre.
The parents identified the body. The next day, they found at home the elaborate suicide note with details of how their daughter had met Rawal, his promises of marriage, how a conversation with his brother had made her realise that he has a wife and children, and finally the way he had blackmailed her.
Rawal was arrested from his home and has been sent to police custody till July 27. The police will investigate if his family was aware of his relationship with the student.
