The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday issued an order disqualifying a corporator from T-ward (which includes Mulund) for submitting a fake caste certificate. According to the order issued by the election department, Bhavna Jobanputra, a corporator from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of ward number 99 had submitted a fake certificate before the civic elections held in 2012.
An official from the municipal secretary’s department said she had falsified the documents while filing the nomination papers before the elections. “She has been disqualified under Section 16 (1c) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888,” the official said. In such cases, the corporator is usually barred from contesting elections for six years, and bypolls are held to re-elect a corporator. Interestingly, the young corporator from Mulund was ranked 28 of the 226 corporators by city NGO Praja Foundation in its ‘Know your Councillor’ report for 2014. The BMC’s next elections are likely to be held in 2017.
